In this new serie of video, Raphael Elig appropriates certain sequences of cult cinema (Blow-Up), popular (a Bollywood film) and wipes out all narration to only keep the scenes that interests him and on which he composes an original soundtrack. He gives them a new lighting and transforms the sequences into geometric structures or wallpaper videos. As many games and visuals sequences in which the viewer absorbs himself until hypnosis. A wink to Marcel Duchamp, his roto reliefs and his "Anemic Cinema" just as the cinetic and optical art of the 50's and 60's.

news
SPACEMAKER is the project of an artist, Raphael Elig, meeting simulteanously different expression methods: musical composition, creation of synthesis pictures, video and programming, in order to create a virtual "space" in permanent evolution and accessible to the public on DVD. It is edited by SONY MUSIC VIDEO in the DVD by Numbers collection. (10.2003)

The DVD SPACEMAKER proposes 2 parts composed of 8 videos: 4 videos to play successively and 4 others videos more ambiantales to loop.

Those 8 videos are 3 to 20 min long and offer as many occasions for the artist to explore the ratio between man and machine, the unconscious relation of the genetic code and the binary computer code.

01 Headache 03'50"
Video & Music : Raphael Elig

A piece created from pictures of removed archives on internet, processed and colourized through a mechanical gesture. All starts with a binary alternation: a game with an archetype of the male (a military parade) and an archetype of the female (the dancers) that slips very quickly towards an ironic confusion of the kinds and positions. What if the entertainment was not so far from a military parade? Indisposition and headache... ? Just one remedy: " dristan tablets! "

02 We'll Never Die 02'40"
Video & Music : Raphael Elig

This piece uses the pixel as a metaphor of the genetic code; therefore the equation pixel = genetic code is suggested with the face’s multiplication : a wink to cloning resides in the mise en abymes of the face.
In the ending sequence, the skeletons represent this infinity of little deaths which are the living caracteristic and may be also the condition of immortality.

03 Come Out 3'50"
Video & Music : Raphael Elig

This piece represents a 3D face on a 2 dimension background. It is a tribute to Steve Reich’s piece named alike and uses a repetitive audio process that is reproduced on the face’s expression and its background.
Through a loop of the sentence «come out and show them», the video explores numerous rythmic and harmonic possibilities. The timbre and the voice are in perfect synchronisation with the graphic animation.

04 George Sand 05’00”
Video & Music : Raphael Elig & Eric Pajot

" In the test of Rorschach, although the drawing of the spots are not figurative, it can resemble to known forms, that are frequently located and stated by numerous questioned persons. A gifted person with a good intellectual capacity has, according to Rorschach, to give a sufficient number of those "good forms" as responses. The test informs on the nature of intelligence: abstract or concrete, synthetic or analytical, according to the interpratation of the task, entire or in parts ; dynamic or passive intelligence, according to the degree of elaboration of the response; etc.

05 Prism 20’00”
Video & Music : Raphael Elig

In Physics, a transparent body which separates white light into a spectrum of colours. ‘Prism’ emulates this physical process (visual and acoustic) associating a purely decorative dimension.

06 Vahiné 03’00’’
Video & Music : Raphael Elig

Vahine video is constructed on a sequence (extracted from the Headache Video) edited as a loop. This video emphasizes the decorative aspect of a narrative instant.

07 Dezine 09’30”
Video & Music : Raphael Elig

The video 'Dezine' restores a visual and musical atmosphere connoted from the 60/70’s.This filtered atmosphere, through a pixellisation process, emphasizes the aesthetic nature of the video. There is a relation between images and sounds that evolves and induces a cinematographic notion. One passes from abstraction to narration, from reality to virtuality looking through this filtering object, as a moucharabieh that distorts and induces variations in our perception of the scene.

08 Spacemaker 03’30’’
Video : Raphael Elig
Music : Raphael Elig & Valentine Gay

In this video the ratio human/machine appears as a robotic dance, a repetitive gestual and stages the human figure using machines in different situations. The soundtrack underlines this duality human/machine adding 2 synthetic voices (male/female): the computer gets more human.
